We’ll be providing feedback to the crew at San Juan LEADS to help with the planning of future trips of the San Juan Huts for those with visual impairments or other adaptive requirements.

During the two week visit, Steve Baskis, founder of Blind Endeavors Foundation, will be giving inspiration speeches to Telluride Intermediate School and Ridgway Elementary.

We will also be creating a short film to summarize the trip.

If you’re in the Montrose area on September 23rd, be sure to stop by 2 Rascals Brewery at 6:30pm to check out the video and photos from the trip.

What’s happened so far:

(last updated 9/14/16)

9/9: Arrival, welcomed into Joe and Anne’s home and staying in a “Weatherport” structure…it is a pretty unique experience being “off the grid”

9/10-9/12: Two day “acclimatization hike” and intro to the huts (Approximately 10 miles of hiking).

School Visits:

Steve shared a little bit of his story and information about technology he uses on a day to day basis followed by a Q&A.

Special thanks to the Pinhead Institute for organizing the school visits.

  • Ridgway Elementary: Spoke to 95 students consisting of 2nd-5th grade.
  • Telluride Intermediate: Spoke to a group of 80 fifth grade students.

Kids come up with some great questions and can be a little humorous as well.  Here are a few that came from the students:

“If you lost your phone, would you be screwed?”

Steve asked “What would you do if you were trapped in a dark closet” and a student replied “PANIC!”

  • Due to the lack of internet service on this route, we will be limited on updates until the 22nd.
